HIU replacement in Brentwood and Romford
A heat interface unit, or HIU, is what a flat on communal or district heating has instead of its own appliance. It does not burn anything and it has no flue. Hot water arrives from the building's central plant through a pair of pipes, and the unit uses it to heat your radiators and your tap water through plate heat exchangers.Replacing one means working with the building's system, not just yours. The isolation valves, the strainers, the actuator and the controls all have to match what the block runs, and the unit has to be commissioned against the right flow temperature or it will never give you the hot water it should.Labour is £750. The flat is isolated from the riser, the old unit comes off and the area is covered before we start.
- 4The new unit goes in
New pipework where it is needed, the unit fitted, strainers cleaned, the system filled and pressure tested.
- 5We set it to work and show you
Commissioned against the building's flow temperature, the controls set up, and we go through it with you before we leave.

What does it cost?
£750 labour. The HIU and the materials are priced separately, because the unit depends on what the building will accept.
Do I need the managing agent's permission?
Usually yes, and often they have a list of units they will accept. Ask them before anything is ordered. We are happy to speak to them.
What is a heat interface unit?
It is the box in the cupboard in a flat on communal heating. It takes hot water from the building's plant room and uses it to run your radiators and your taps. It does not burn gas and it has no flue.

What if the heating or hot water has stopped?
Tell us what has changed and any fault code on the display, and have a look at what the pressure gauge reads. If there is water coming out of the unit, turn the water off at the stopcock and ring us. A photo of the display saves a lot of guessing.
